BRENHAM, Texas – Washington County officials said they plan to start vaccinating people against the coronavirus this week. The state recently designated Washington County EMS as a vaccine hub. Kevin Deramus, director of Washington County EMS, said the agency anticipates receiving 2,000 doses this week. He said officials have been preparing for the vaccine’s arrival, testing and retesting things like call center capacity and the administration process. He said he believes all 2,000 shots will be administered within four days at a drive-thru site set up at the Washington County Fairgrounds.

A federal grand jury in Austin returned a seven-count indictment Tuesday charging Paul Kruse with six counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, according to a Justice Department statement. Health officials notified Blue Bell in February 2015 that two ice cream products from the company’s flagship factory in the central Texas city of Brenham and its Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, plant tested positive for listeria. Blue Bell recalled products after its ice cream was linked to 10 listeria cases in four states, including three deaths in Kansas. Prosecutors allege that Kruse schemed to deceive Blue Bell customers by directing employees to remove potentially contaminated products from store freezers without alerting grocers and consumers as to why. Kruse was initially charged May 1, the same day that Blue Bell Creameries pleaded guilty to two counts of distributing contaminated goods.

HOUSTON – A federal court in Texas sentenced Brenham-based Blue Bell Creameries L.P. to pay $17.25 million in criminal penalties for shipments of contaminated products linked to a 2015 listeria outbreak, the Justice Department announced Thursday. Blue Bell pleaded guilty in May 2020 to two misdemeanor counts of distributing adulterated ice cream products. Two weeks after receiving notification of the first positive listeria tests, Texas state officials informed Blue Bell that additional state-led testing confirmed Listeria in a third product. Blue Bell again chose not to issue any formal notification to customers regarding the positive tests. Food safety is our highest priority, and we know we must continue to be vigilant every day.

BRENHAM, Texas – A nursing and rehabilitation facility in Washington County has seen dozens of cases of coronavirus. As of Monday, 102 residents and staff members at Brenham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center tested positive for COVID-19, according to numbers posted on a county website. “The nursing home in town got hit really hard,” Dr. William Robert Loesch, the local health authority, said in a video update dated April 29. Karan Janes said her mother, Margie McCracken, 90, was a resident who died several days after learning she tested positive. We have implemented many protocols and procedures to reduce the risk to patients and staff at all of our facilities.

HOUSTON – A locally owned and operated food delivery business is partnering with nearby restaurants to serve residents in Tomball, Magnolia and Brenham. “Food’s Here” is an app that was launched by Mitchell Bethea, a Tomball resident, in 2017. “I’ve probably signed at least 10 restaurants (this past week) because people are jumping on board (for) delivery,” Bethea told Community Impact. In anticipation of restaurants resorting to curbside and delivery, Bethea had hired more drivers in March, prior to dine-in restrictions. “Food’s Here” delivers within 12 miles from any partnering restaurant.
