There has been a sharp uptick in coronavirus-related deaths in southern and western U.S. states, leading to overcrowding in morgues and funeral homes, NBC News reported. With states like Texas and Florida breaking daily COVID-19 case records each day, scientists say this may not last, as coronavirus deaths are recorded several weeks after a person is infected. Thats why were asking people to wear face masks, Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales told KRIS and Texas Tribune, I am now having to order additional body bags and morgue trailers. According to the Texas Tribune, Houston residents are dying at home before they make it to a hospital, and hospitals are now counting for trucks to expand their morgue capacity.

County medical examiner Dr. Adel Shaker has requested an extra morgue trailer, provided by FEMA to local authorities. A morgue trailer was in place at the beginning of the pandemic, but it was released early, Shaker said. In Houston, a spokeswoman at the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences insisted that no extra capacity is needed at the county morgue right now.
