Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee will host a news conference Friday morning to discuss the violation of the Crown Act after a Barbers Hill high school student was repeatedly disciplined for his hairstyle choice.

Community leaders and civil rights activists are holding a protest this Wednesday ahead of the trial for a Barbers Hill student who has repeatedly been disciplined for his hairstyle choice.

The family of a Barbers Hill High School student is speaking out just days after the district’s superintendent announced that the teen will continue facing disciplinary measures over his hairstyle.

A Texas high school student has missed nearly half of his junior year in the classroom after being disciplined by leaders in his school district for his hairstyle.

Another week of district competition is in the books. While several of the perennial Houston volleyball powers remain on top of the power rankings, nothing is ever set in stone.

Over the past week, not much has changed in terms of who the top teams are. Grand Oaks and Cinco Ranch are still battling for the top spot in Class 6A, while Fulshear and Barbers Hill maintain their exemplary standing in Class 5A.

From team and individual pictures, social media shout-outs and video interviews, it is all there for the student-athletes to feel like a superstar. VYPE had its Barbers Hill 2023 Fall Media Day recently.

Greater Houston is led by super-power Grand Oaks in Class 6A, and Fulshear and Barbers Hill in Class 5A. After that, it’s up for grabs. New Cypress Ranch coach Collea McKinney has continued the Mustangs’ success and Cinco Ranch looks formidable in the tough District 19-6A. Foster looks like another contender in Class 5A.

The matchup between Lake Creek and Barbers Hill was the most anticipated series in the UIL Softball postseason thus far. The Lions came in as the No. 1 team in country and Barbers Hill was the third-ranked team in the nation going into the game.

We’re entering the second half of the UIL Softball postseason following an enthralling array of competitive matchups in the Regional Quarterfinals.

At long last, the UIL Softball postseason has arrived. Can anyone take down Lake Creek High School? Barbers Hill, Foster and Friendswood will give it their best shot as other Class 5A favorites. Following a volatile regular season which showcased the best in H-Town as well as some surprise clubs advancing to playoff contention, the road to the State Title starts now.

In the past 10 years dating back to 2012 (there was no State baseball in 2019), the Greater Houston-area has produced six of the 20 possible State Titles to include Class 6A and Class 5A. Not bad. Barbers Hill (2021, Class 5A), Deer Park (2017, Class 6A), Cypress Ranch (2015, 2012, Class 6A), Tomball (2013, Class 5A) and The Woodlands (2013, Class 6A) all won State Titles. So, who is next?

Barbers Hill entered the 2022 season as the defending Class 5A State Champions after winning the program’s first-ever crown in 2021 and was even crowned the National Champions by MaxPreps.

THE LAKE CREEK LIONS WENT 38-0 IN 2021, BEFORE RUNNING INTO THE BARBERS HILL BUZZ-SAW IN THE REGIONAL FINALS. THE EAGLES SWEPT THE LIONS IN AN INSTANT CLASSIC SERIES AND EVENTUALLY WON THE CLASS 5A STATE TITLE.

It was a wild weekend in Class 5A as a soggy Friday night made for some interesting upsets.

The Buffs made it to the State Championship game in 2018 and 2019. They were Regional Finalists in 2012, 2016, 2017 and 2020.

With a second week of volleyball tournaments under our belts the volleyball picture in Houston continues to get clearer and clearer. With that, there were also some more amazing performances.

To say District 12-5A, Division II is top heavy would be an understatement.

Carl Abseck fondly remembers growing up in Bridgeport, a small, quiet town in north Texas. As a young kid, he excitedly awaited game days for the local high school football team. Abseck could buy a ribbon for a quarter at his elementary school and wear it to Friday night games.

Bowie's Abbey Smith is a national recruit and signed with Auburn in November and was thrust into the TikTok world sparking some debate. VYPE: How long have you been playing softball and how did you get your start? Smith: I started playing softball when I was 4 years old and have been playing for the past 13 years. VYPE: You made a TikTok that went viral. I think it went viral because it started an argument between softball & baseball players in the comments.

MONT BELVIEU, Texas – Alicia Keys surprised a Houston-area student with $20,000 for “standing up for what is right” on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “I want to tell you that I couldn’t believe the story when I heard it,” Keys said on the show. “I’m super proud of you for standing up for what you know is right. Arnold, who has since withdrawn from the Barbers Hill, said he was given two options: in-school suspension or alternative school. They deserve to see me walk across the stage.”DeGeneres and Keys hope the school changes their mind.

The issue is how long the hair of male students at Barbers Hill High School should be. They said that student Deandre Arnold is not the only one being targeted by the district’s dress code. Arnold is Barbers Hill senior who has been told his hair is not in compliance with the district’s dress code. His family said his dreadlocks are part of their Trinidadian culture, and he has been out of school since refusing to cut his hair to meet the district’s dress code. “He is absolutely permitted to come back to school,” said Barbers Hill ISD Superintendent Greg Poole.
