Children At Risk released its 17th edition of “Growing up in Houston” as a catalyst to address issues facing children in the city of Houston.

IN THIS EPISODE: After several rough cases involving abuse and neglect in children--including here in Harris County, Host Khambrel Marshall sits down with Dr. Bob Sanborn, president and CEO of Children At Risk. He believes that much of the abuse and suffering in children can be reduced if the government stepped forward.

Children at Risk, a Texas nonprofit plans to bring advocates, community members, and local leaders to a news conference to discuss the needs of Uvalde after Tuesday’s mass shooting that took place where 19 kids and 2 teachers were killed at Robb Elementary.

A roundtable discussion was held Wednesday morning by Children At Risk to discuss racial inequities experienced by children and families in Texas.

Critical Race Theory is not taught in schools. College professors say it is an overarching theory researched in college-level courses.

Children at Risk, along with other school officials across the Houston area, said Mount Carmel Academy is the No. 1 high school in the Houston area.

Following a string of high-profile child abuse cases in the Houston area, child advocates argue Texas needs to change its priorities when it comes to providing a safety net for abused and neglected children.

HOUSTON – As the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out continues, recent numbers by the CDC gives a better picture of who’s getting vaccinated. Sanborn said there are many factors that likely play into those lower numbers among the Hispanic community. As far as turning the numbers around across the board though, many believe it’ll be a community effort and getting everyone on board. “We do need to do a lot of outreach and education to our communities about the benefits of the vaccine,” Caracostis said. ”We’re going to have to be able to craft unique messages for the Latino community so that people understand that this is safe,” Sanborn said.
