HOUSTON – Houston’s art scene is about to get bigger this year. Arts District Houston in Winter Street Studios will open their welcome center this Saturday at 1 p.m., bringing large-scale public art inside and out as a way to support local artists impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, a news release said. The new welcome center is roughly 230 square feet and will feature artwork from a local artist every month, and the grand opening will coincide with Sawyer Yards’ Second Saturday event, where visitors have the chance to meet hundreds of local artists during open studio hours, socially-distanced. GALVESTON, Texas – Galveston City Council and the Galveston Cultural Arts Commission voted to send three potential flag designs for a final vote to occur later this month. HOUSTON – The Houston area will no longer have a Sears location after this weekend. A KPRC 2 viewer pointed out the Sears location at Macroplaza Mall in Pasadena, formerly known as Pasadena Town Square, is set to close this Sunday, with yellow “store closing” signs posted all over. By the start of 2021, fewer than 100 Sears and KMart stores remain in the U.S., Forbes reported. The Pasadena store is still listed on the Sears website with hours listed from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Sunday and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Only Sears Appliance Repair flagship stores remain in the Houston area, including ones on North Shepherd and Westheimer.

In a news release, The Toasted Yolk will be opening their 15th and 16th restaurants in League City and Bellaire after leases were signed for the two franchise locations. HOUSTON – The Houston Fire Department has kicked off its annual Operation Stocking Stuffer Toy Drive on Friday, with changes to keep everyone safe and healthy. This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, HFD will not be accepting toys at its fire stations and cannot accept bicycles, stuffed animals or used toys. Eater Houston reported this is the third location for Katz’s in the Houston-area, which includes The Woodlands and Westheimer. The deli restaurant, which opened on Sept. 15, will also bring in a new look that sets apart from the other locations,Customers can expect the same New York-style deli sandwiches, Kosher hot dogs and other popular items at the new Heights location, according to Eater Houston. SUGAR LAND, Texas The City of Sugar Land in Fort Bend County is the top Texas city with the highest response rate, according to latest Census data. In a blog posted by the city Monday, Sugar Land has a 78.6% response rate for cities with populations over 100,000. The last Census response rate in 2010 was 85%, according to the city. In-person Census takers will visit unresponsive households, City of Sugar Land said in its blog. KATY, Texas Katy ISD unveiled their 2020-2021 school year reopening plan on a separate website for parents and students. The website, called Smart Restart, highlights important links for students who wish to return to school in person, and those who want to return online. It also includes resources for parents like safety protocols at all campuses and FAQ pages. The district unveiled two methods of learning: on-campus and virtual, also known as the Katy Virtual Academy. Parents and students who want to enroll in Katy Virtual Academy may do it between July 20 and August 5.

ARLINGTON, Texas The Texas Rangers unveiled their $1.2 billion baseball stadium on Thursday, but fans seemed less than impressed, CBS Sports reported. The proposed stadium, which the Rangers plan to play in this upcoming season, did not line up to the finished product. Despite receiving their diplomas, two recent graduates from Spring ISD’s Carl Wunsche Sr. High School couldn’t leave their work unfinished. Engineering student Dawn Ford was responsible for building the prosthetic model, while veterinary science student Shianne Koch worked to make sure that any design would be comfortable and safe for Tootsie. The project came to an unexpected halt after spring break when the students were unable to return to school due to the coronavirus pandemic. According to Spring ISD, Tootsie’s right prosthetic requires some minor additional adjustment, but the left one fits well. At the fitting, the students took another set of measurements and said they intend to create the final prosthetics quickly.

A record number of 84 Houston Independent School District graduates have been awarded full scholarships from the Marvy Finger Family Foundation. The scholarships create the opportunity for each student to attend a two-year college to pursue Career and Technical Education (CTE) certificates or associates degrees. According HISD, scholarship recipients were required to pursue a career and technical program; on top of maintaining a minimum 2.0 GPA, being involved in school activities, and displaying a financial need. Additionally, the foundation also provides mentoring and food scholarships in partnership with the Houston Food Bank that provides 60 pounds of food twice a month while the students are in college. The financial assistance the foundation is able to offer these students is instrumental in helping them build rewarding careers.

FRIENDSWOOD, Texas – Friendswood Independent School District officials said they were notified Wednesday evening that a graduate and a guest who attended the June 5 graduation ceremony for Friendswood High School tested positive for COVID-19. The student and the guest were sitting in the yellow section of the stadium, district officials said in a message sent to parents and staff. District officials said both the student and the guest were not showing symptoms at the time of the graduation ceremony, and all individuals who came in contact with them have been notified. Friendswood ISD officials said the incubation period for those who may have been exposed ends on June 19. Students, staff and guests who were in attendance are strongly advised to follow guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and monitor their health, district officials said.

In Galveston, Mayor Jim Yarbrough announced that he planned to step down from his office on July 15 due to concerns over his health during the pandemic, the Associated Press reported. The Galveston County Daily News reported Yarbrough announced his resignation in a Wednesday letter to City Council. Yarbrough said he only has one functioning lung and has been self-isolating since the coronavirus outbreak. Yarbrough told the newspaper the city needed a mayor who could be physically present during the pandemic and hurricane season, which started on June 1. Mayor Pro Tem Craig Brown will take over mayoral duties until a new mayor can be elected on Nov. 3.

GALVESTON, Texas The City of Galveston recently announced new parking changes for Galvestons Seawall, city officials announced in a release. City officials redistributed 220 free parking spaces in four sections on the north side of the Seawall, between 12th and 19th streets, 33rd and 39th streets, 53rd and 61st streets, and 85th to the 9100 block of Seawall Blvd. "This change in free parking on the Seawall is part of those efforts.Previously, parking was available between 69th and 81st streets. The redistribution of parking spaces is part of Galvestons ongoing Beach Access Plan compliance project, providing wider access to all public beaches on the Island, Galveston city officials said. All other parking spaces along the Seawall are paid, and costs $1 per hour between 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

GALVESTON, Tx – A baby dolphin was rescued by the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network (TMMSN) last week in Galveston. According to their Facebook post, TMMSN said the dolphin, named Trooper is estimated to be around eight to 12 weeks old. “[Trooper] continues to receive around-the-clock intensive care at our rehab center in Galveston and is showing signs of improvement,” the post said. HOUSTON – The Tasting Room’s original Uptown Park will close their doors on Saturday, becoming yet another restaurant shutting down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Owner Jerry Lasco said in an email to employees Tuesday that failed rent negotiations and limited revenue are reasons for the shutdown. “In the wake of the pandemic, although we have tried many scenarios, it has not been possible to keep the space running at limited capacity,” said Lasco. The restaurant’s original location opened in 2013 and has provided more than 2,000 meals to hospitality workers impacted by the pandemic, Eater Houston reported. Lasco’s other concept, Max’s Wine Dive and The Tasting Room at CityCentre near Beltway 8 and I-10 will remain open.

PEARLAND, Tx – The coronavirus pandemic is threatening to permanently shut down VFW Post 7109 in Pearland due to funding, six months after marking their 50th anniversary. The organization has turned to GoFundMe to raise $20,000 to keep the facility open not only to veterans of all military branches, but also to the community at large. Located at 4202 Walnut Street, VFW Post 7109 organized several notable events for the public such as cook-offs, parades and festivals. PEARLAND, Tx – A Pearland-based chemical company that normally manufactures salt and brine remover switched gears last month to produce a hot commodity: hand sanitizer. Each gallon of hand sanitizer from Custom Chemicals and Coating will be sold for $60 each. The hand sanitizer, according to their website, exceeds requirements from the CDC and the World Health Organization. Customers who are interested in purchasing the gallons of hand sanitizer can order online, but they must pick up in person. The company is also selling hard surface liquid cleaners for $25.

The city of Galveston announced on Sunday that it was closing all public beaches in the city and restricting traffic on the beach west of the end of the Seawall. As of Sunday, the Galveston County Health District had confirmed 60 cases of COVID-19 within the county. In a press release, the city said they had attempted to avoid closing public beaches as they wanted to provide residents a form of exercise while maintaining safe social distancing. “As a result, the city of Galveston must restrict access to the public beach. As a public beach, it must be closed to all.”The orders will be enforced by the Galveston Police Department, the City Marshal’s Office and the Galveston Beach Patrol.

Shudde Bros. Hatters got its start in 1907 as the Shudde Southern Hat Company on Trinity Avenue in downtown Houston, opened by Neal’s grandfather Al Shudde. When Jack Pytel of Needville went fishing with his friends at a ranch at a runoff from the Brazos River, little did he know that he would bring home more than just catfish. Pytel, 17, and his friends caught in Fort Bend County a 7 foot, 7 inch alligator gar, weighing 190 pounds with a rod and reel. Using chicken liver as his bait, he knew from the start that he was catching something bigger. “I called out my buddies to help out by catching the gar,” he said, “I didn’t realize what it was until after a half-hour later it jumped out of the water.”Jack Pytel with his alligator gar. His family would like to know the history of the bracelet found in a strawberry patch in Minnesota. "I don’t know who this woman is and I don’t know anyone who lives in St. Paul, Minnesota, so I would love to know how this bracelet ended up in St. Paul, Minnesota,” Rozier said.
