As an adult, by my late 20s, I started to feel a little bit “meh” about Christmas. Sure, it was a nice time of year, and I enjoyed seeing my family when I could, but I didn’t really understand the appeal of decorating, baking or most holiday-themed events. All of that changed, however, once I got into my 30s and had kids.

Joven Tapiador, a teen from San Antonio, landed on launching a community service project, through Summer of Service, or SOS, an organization that educates youth in the area through service-learning and opportunities. So Tapiador began a letter project. Letters written through Tapiadors project will be sent to residents in two San Antonio-area nursing homes, and the teen says he hopes the pen pals can create a relationship. You cant just send one letter to a senior and then have them send one letter back and never talk again, Tapiador said.
