San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan started training camp with a declaration that second-year player Trey Lance will be the starting quarterback and Jimmy Garoppolo will be moving on soon.

New York Jets defensive lineman Carl Lawson is lost for the season after rupturing an Achilles tendon during a joint practice Thursday with the Green Bay Packers.

It was a costly victory for San Francisco, which was already short-handed before losing Garoppolo to an ankle injury and Mostert to an injured knee.
