Mark your calendars for Nov. 1 as Discovery Green transforms into a vibrant celebration of life, culture, and remembrance with its Día de Los Muertos festival.

For the first time this year, a Houston-area funeral home held a Day of the Dead festival to honor the celebration and reunite with the spirits of loved ones who had passed on.

Day of the Dead is a tradition celebrated in Mexico that has recently become popular in the U.S.

Organizers announced the city’s inaugural Día de Los Muertos parade and festival, which will take place at Sam Houston Park in downtown Houston on Saturday, Nov. 6.

On Nov. 1 and 2, millions will be commemorating the Mexican holiday Día De Los Muertos, where families and friends gather together to pray for and remember their loved ones who have passed.

“Dia de Los Muertos” or “Day of the Dead” will be the highlight this fall at Discovery Green.

HOUSTON – The River Oaks District is all about community and understood the importance of Dia De Los Muertos which is why they are helping people learn more about the Mexican Holiday by hosting a week long list of activities. There’s a beautiful altar in their gallery with important information about how to make your very own altar at home to celebrate your departed loved ones.

It will sit alongside fresh flowers and Salazar's blouse on Day of the Dead, a holiday that Salazar actually didn't care for much. She decided not to schedule surgery until after Day of the Dead because she wanted to honor her mother properly. Ofelia, 88, is a fifth-generation altar-maker, and both were cultural advisers on Disney-Pixar's “Coco," a movie centered around Day of the Dead. Besides the pandemic-induced sadness, the Esparzas believe Latinos are more interested in observing Day of the Dead. “Just like Mother's Day and Father’s Day this year, this is when people go visit their loved ones.”Ultimately, some say pageantry isn't what's important.

HOUSTON – The Day of the Dead (el Día de los Muertos), is a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink and celebration. Arnaldo Richards Picos is doing just that with decorated altars, cocktails and traditional food including the bread of the dead. Another great tradition many take part in during the Holiday celebrated November 1st and 2nd is painted their faces in skull designs. They do this to represent a deceased loved one or an expression of themselves. One local makeup artist, Edward Sanchez has been doing this for years and has a wide range of designs for people to get creative with.

So, Dr. Regan gives her tips (with CDC guidance) on how to safely collect and distribute candy:WEAR MASKS“The number one rule this year is going to be making sure everyone is wearing their mask,” said Dr. Regan. You also don’t want to wear the costume mask over the regular mask,” Dr. Regan explained. Spread out the candy on a table, the sidewalk, or have goodie bags lined up for easy grab and go. “Because you are expelling your saliva that you would with normal speaking, you are increasing the amount of virus if you are a carrier,” Dr. Regan said. “Even with the mask on, just because not everyone’s mask is as effective, more forceful breathing sometimes respiratory droplets get through that mask.”

Barbie lovers, you might want to add this to your growing collection. The second edition of a collectible Da de Muertos doll that celebrates a time-honored Mexican tradition of honoring loved ones who have passed away. The doll was designed by Mexican-American doll designer Javier Meabe, who also designed the first Da de Muertos doll and the Jurassic Park Claire doll. Meabe said he made sure to stay true to the tradition by adding elements associated with the holiday, such as marigold flowers, the skeletal elements and the traditional calavera design. The doll comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and is priced at $75.
