It was the lowest level since Freddie began tracking average rates in 1971. The average rate on the 15-year fixed-rate mortgage eased to 2.58% from 2.62%. The housing market has shown strength and robust homebuying demand, but it may be difficult to sustain because of the tight supply of homes available for sale, said Freddie Mac chief economist Sam Khater.

The average rate on the 15-year fixed-rate mortgage was unchanged at 2.62%. But applications for jobless aid, though still historically high, have now declined for 10 straight weeks since peaking in mid-March when the coronavirus hit the economy hard. That's a sign that the worst of the recession may have passed and the economy may have already bottomed.
