HOUSTON – Kroger and partners kicked off a grocery donation event Wednesday morning for the community surrounding Jim’s Supermarket, which burned down last month. The partnership is with Kroger, the City of Houston, the Houston Food Bank and METRO to deliver groceries directly to Houstonians in need. “Usually we are in the business of transporting people, but today we are in the business of transporting food to people in need, so we are excited for the opportunity,” said METRO’s Senior Director of Contracted, Paratransit and Micro Transit Services, Art Jackson. Metro vehicles and drivers delivered the groceries directly to the homes of identified families in need. Representatives from Kroger said they are doing a similar grocery donation in the area next month.

The Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT) was approved by the USDA for students who receive free and reduced lunches. Since some school districts, like Houston ISD, have so many low-income students that qualify for the benefit, it is offered to every student, regardless of the family’s income. Because of a provision that we have, all HISD students receive free lunch. We checked with Houston-area school districts. If your child attends one of those schools, they can get the $285 P-EBT card.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit Thursday in a Harris County court claiming that Cal-Maine Foods Inc., the largest producer of eggs in the country, is price gouging, according to a press release. "The domestic egg market is intensely competitive and highly volatile," Eller said. "For decades, we have priced most of our sales off an independent, third-party market quote published by Urner Barry Publications, Inc. We have no control over this market quote and it fluctuates wildly from week to week and sometimes day to day. We have been consistent in our pricing practices whether we sell at a profit or at a loss." Penalties for violating the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act include fines of up to $10,000 per violation, plus an additional $250,000 if elderly consumers were affected.

SAN ANTONIO – H-E-B plans to deliver 75,000 chef-inspired meals to hospitals across Texas for health care workers battling the frontlines of COVID-19. The meals will be delivered starting Friday, a news release said. In San Antonio, H-E-B will start at 9 a.m. Friday by delivering meals to “hundreds” of health care workers at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital in the Medical Center, the release said. “In total, H-E-B will deliver more than 75,000 H-E-B Meal Simple meals to hospitals across Texas.”Doctors, nurses and other health care workers, including those in the emergency room providing care for COVID-19 patients, will be invited to enjoy the meals. The disease first appeared in late 2019 in Wuhan, China, but spread around the world in early 2020, causing the World Health Organization to declare a pandemic in March.

HOUSTON – Media mogul Tyler Perry paid for seniors' groceries across the Southeast on Wednesday. It happened at 44 Krogers in the Atlanta area and 29 Winn-Dixies in Louisiana during special hours for those at higher risk of contracting coronavirus. “I stood there stunned because this is (in the morning) I haven’t had my coffee yet,” said Ray Metoyer, who had his groceries paid for by Perry. “It took a minute to sink in.”

(CNN) – Costco is giving first responders and healthcare workers priority admittance into their warehouses. The company recently started limiting the number of people into each store. Since then, Costco customers had to wait in long lines to get in. Beginning Wednesday, first responders such as police officers, paramedics and firefighters in addition to healthcare workers that are members can cut the line with proof of identification. Other changes include earlier closing times and limiting the number of guests a member can bring in to two people.

SAN ANTONIO – H-E-B will provide its employees with masks and gloves starting Saturday and store officials are “strongly encouraging” employees to wear them while at work during the current COVID-19 outbreak. A statement from the company said while they understand the use of masks does not fully prevent the transmission of COVID-19, they will start providing them to make sure their employees feel comfortable. “As an essential service provider at this time, masks and gloves are just another safeguard we’ve implemented across our company to protect the health and safety of our Partners, customers and communities,” said Martin Otto, H-E-B chief operating officer. “We are here for all Texans and we take our role to protect public safety seriously.”Employees who wear the provided masks and gloves must still follow the hygiene, sanitation and social distancing protocols that are in place at the stores, H-E-B officials said. H-E-B officials said they would provide the masks as long as they could maintain supply.
