After nearly 40 years as an educator, the superintendent of the Alief Independent School District is retiring in December.

Alief Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a starting salary of $60,000, a $2,000 supplement for returning employees and a $500 step increase for teacher paygrade positions during Monday’s board meeting.

Thousands of students went back to the classroom this week following the winter break.

The Alief Independent School District has put out a letter to parents warning them about an app called, “Party in My Dorm.”

HOUSTON – School is back in session today for Alief ISD Thursday morning. Things will look different this year for students and educators because instruction is 100% virtual for the time being. One was held at Alief Taylor High School and another is slated for Thursday at 8 a.m. at Elsik High School. Principal Mary Williams said although things will look different they are excited to get the school year started. “The first day of school is always my favorite day of school and this is just a little bit different,” said Williams.

Some high school students take classes where they have labs and need to have access to school facilities. But the number of hours teachers are expected to teach in virtual learning is based on the content they are teaching. There’s nothing that a school district can put in place that will resolve that issue 100% until students come back to school. Several volunteers and organizations teamed up to give away free food boxes and school supplies to families in need. Virtual instructionThe student would receive 100% online instruction through Alief ISD Learns at Home or Alief Virtual School (Powered by Pearson). Alief Learns option is available to all Alief ISD students in English and Spanish. Key Differences in Alief Learns and Alief Virtual SchoolAlief Learns courses are through Schoology. Students who would like a full-time virtual learning environment for the duration of the 2020-2021 school year can use Alief Virtual School instead. The decision to place the student into Alief Learns versus the Alief Virtual School will be determined by both the parent/guardian and the school administration.

Alief Independent School District Superintendent HD Chambers says school officials have decided to begin the school year online. Chambers said he doesn’t want any student to lose out on their education because of the pandemic but the thought of how to bring students and teachers back to the classroom safely keeps him up at night. What resources and support will the school district give parents? Right now Alief school officials are working hard to figure out how to bring back students in the safest way possible. The school district sent out a survey to parents back in June.
