Former Houston Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow has filed a breach of contract lawsuit against the team, seeking more than $22 million in salary owed under his deal when he was fired in January. Luhnow and manager AJ Hinch were suspended for the season last Jan. 13 by Manfred and fired by the Astros later that day. The team was fined $5 million and stripped of its first- and second-round draft picks in both 2020 and 2021. The contract called for disputes to go to an arbitration with Manfred or his designee, but Luhnow asked that to be set aside because of Manfred’s involvement. Jeff Luhnow provided his perspective on the Houston Astros cheating scandal in an exclusive, 37-minute, sit-down with KPRC 2. After being fired by the Astros, he said he was able to read thousands of text-message records from Astros staff members. They were aware it was wrong, and they also were using text messages to cheat on the job. And, like I said, it’s all there in black and white -- pretty clear, when you read through those text messages. And it’s also pretty clear who was not involved.”One of his frustrations comes from those texts not making their way into the ruling.

HOUSTON – I’ll start by stating the obvious: the Houston Astros scandal rocked the MLB. Even folks who didn’t like sports became interested in the intricate details of how the Astros had pulled this off. Until our sit-down interview, I had no idea just how much energy and how many resources he poured into trying to prove his innocence. It’s not my job to tell you what to believe, but I think the interview is worth a watch. He discussed the timeline of the Astros cheating, the details in which some of it happened, and the Astros employees' methods that were used to make it happen.

They’re serving their suspensions, and once their suspensions are over, then they’ll be free to pursue their careers. Avila said it is important that the next manager be able to help with talent evaluation, since there are important decisions to make throughout the roster.

(AP) – Alex Bregman’s three extra-base hits included one of Houston’s four home runs, and the Astros trimmed their magic number to one for clinching the American League’s last playoff spot with a 12-4 win over the Texas Rangers on Thursday night. Josh Reddick also had three hits, capped by a two-run homer in the ninth. The Astros (29-28) have to win only one of their three remaining games against Texas to secure second place in the AL West, and a spot in baseball’s expanded playoff during the pandemic-shortened season. He held the Rangers without a run until Willie Calhoun's two-run homer in the sixth. The team announced the hiring on Wednesday and said Baker will be introduced in Houston on Thursday. “Throughout his successful career, Dusty has embodied the qualities that we were looking for in a manager,” Astros owner Jim Crane said in a statement. A three-time National League Manager of the Year, Baker last managed the Washington Nationals, who let him go after a 97-65 season in 2017. He was selected MVP of the 1977 NL Championship Series and won a Gold Glove in 1981, when he helped the Dodgers to a World Series title.

HOUSTON – According to Houston Astros owner Jim Crane, the team will address the open field manager job before they move on to hiring a general manager. Currently, Crane is working with the remaining front-office leadership group to fill the duties of fired GM Jeff Luhnow. During interviews Friday night at the Astros Diamond Dreams Gala, Crane said he would start interviewing candidates for the general manager position next week. It’s very late in the game for a GM hire, and Crane has mentioned internal candidates will get interviews. Jim McIngvale, who is also known as “Mattress Mack,” is a huge fan and was in the same boat as many on Monday when he found out about the suspension and then firing of Houston Astros manager AJ Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow. From the Texans game yesterday to what happened today I’m still trying to process it all,” McIngvale said. In 2017, he had a “Win it All” promotion which promised customers who bought $3,000 or more in mattress refunds if the Astros won the World Series. Last year, he placed a $3.5 million bet on the Astros winning the World Series but lost.

Monday’s suspension -- and eventual firing -- of former Astros managers AJ Hinch puts him in the record books. Hinch is now one of just three baseball managers to be suspended by the MLB for a year or more. Jayson Stark, a senior baseball writer at The Athletic explained the significance of Hinch’s suspension in this tweet. And according to Baseballhall.org, Leo Durocher, manager for the Dodgers in 1947, was suspended for “accumulation of unpleasant incidents,” associated with gambling. He was a manager for 24 years, including a stint with the Astros.
