According to Rice Athletics Director Joe Karlgaard, the move is to allow school administrators more time to monitor the coronavirus pandemic at both the local and national level. The Owls were originally scheduled to start their season at the University of Houston on Sept. 3 and then face Army for the home opener on Sept. 12. Rice was also scheduled to play Louisiana State University on Sept. 19, but that game was canceled after the SEC voted to play only conference games this season. Karlgaard said he is also looking at the schedules of other fall sports such as volleyball and cross country.

The University of Houston, which won the AAC Tournament, will host a regional that will include Texas A&M, Baylor and Iowa. A Lamar error on the play, however, allowed Fuda an extra 90 feet to home plate and make it 4-3. Lamar held-off Rice's final at bats in the ninth for the 5-4 final. "Tonight's game was determined by our mental mistakes," said Rice head coach Wayne Graham. By design, a total of six Rice pitchers saw work in the game in advance of the team's upcoming Conference USA league opener.
