After former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murdering George Floyd, the Associated Press reported that high-profile civil rights attorney Ben Crump wants to redirect national attention to the 2019 death of Pamela Turner, a Black Texas woman killed by a Baytown police officer.

Attorney Ben Crump and the family of Pamela Turner will announce Thursday the filing of a federal lawsuit against former Baytown police officer Juan Delacruz and the City of Baytown in the death of Pamela Turner.

HOUSTON – Civil rights attorney Ben Crump and the family of Pamela Turner held a news conference Thursday to address the indictment of the officer involved in Turner’s death. Baytown police Officer Juan Delacruz turned himself into police custody Tuesday following the indictment. Prior to the news conference, Crump released a statement that said:“Like Breonna Taylor, Pamela Turner was unjustly targeted and killed by police and had her name sullied by law enforcement in an attempted cover-up. Devon Jacob, another noted civil rights attorney and former police officer, said Delacruz used excessive force on Turner. It is my personal mission to make sure that Officer Delacruz is held accountable for his objectively unreasonable force.”Delacruz’s first appearance is set for Oct. 28.

Officer Juan Delacruz was released on bond was charged with first-degree aggravated assault by a public servant in the May 13, 2019, shooting. According to investigators, Delacruz encountered Turner, 44, while on patrol and knew that she had warrants out for her arrest. A Harris County grand jury indicted Officer Juan Delacruz on a charge of first-degree aggravated assault by a public servant in the May 13, 2019, shooting. According to investigators, Delacruz encountered Turner, 44, while on patrol and knew that she had warrants out for her arrest. Turner resisted arrest and was able to get hold of Delacruz’s Taser and shock him with it, investigators said. “Ultimately, we presented all of the evidence to a grand jury that determined the Baytown Police officer should be charged with a crime for his actions when he shot Ms. Turner,” Ogg said in a written statement.

BAYTOWN, Texas Dozens gathered in Baytown Thursday to peacefully protest the several controversial cases involving the Baytown Police department. You do not have to take anybody to jail because you are intimidated by our skin color, said a protestor. One of the incidents on the minds of many protestors was the May 2019 shooting of 44-year-old Pamela Turner, who was shot three times during an arrest for outstanding warrants. Baytown Police arrested Skylar Gilmore and Isaiah Phillips after they stopped to record a traffic stop involving one of their friends. Gilmore was also charged with interfering with public duties, but that charge has since been dropped by the Harris County District Attorneys office.
