HOUSTON – On this day, more than 60 years ago a group of Texas Southern University sparked a movement that would lead to desegregation in our city within a year. On Thursday, members of the community honored this moment in history with a march and a new call for justice. On March 4, 1960, the brave students from Texas Southern University marched to the Weingarten’s grocery store, sat down at the counter and asked to be served. Many students took part in Thursday’s march. Earlier this week, the House passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which would ban chokeholds and “no-knock” warrants in drug cases at the federal level.

KPRC 2′s Re’Chelle Turner spoke to Dr. Robert Bullard, who is known as the “father of environmental justice”. Dr. Robert Bullard is a distinguished professor of Urban Planning and Environmental Policy at TSU. His goal is to make sure everyone has the right to live, work and play in a clean environment. Dr. Bullard said the environmental justice movement also relates to the Black Lives Matter Movement and the death of Houston Native George Floyd. Dr. Bullard said just this month, TSU received a $1.25 million grant from the Houston Endowment to start the Robert D. Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Justice.

In March 2019, Kamala Harris’ campaign stump speech mesmerized Houston’s Harris supporters. “This is Harris County’' slogans were painted across a sea of signage throughout the crowded Texas Southern University (TSU) recreation center gymnasium. Then, in 2020, President Biden asked her to join his ticket as vice president. But know that we will applaud you every step of the way.”Those Harris County residents who attended that March 23, 2019 rally at TSU are still applauding Harris “every step of the way.”“I’m just glad she came to my HBCU, TSU,” Smith said. On March 4, 1960, Texas Southern University alumnus John Bland helped organize Houston’s first sit-in at the Weingarten’s grocery store lunch counter. The sit-in was nonviolent and consisted of more than a dozen TSU students. The students called themselves the Progressive Youth Association (PYA), and Bland was the secretary. I joined many students in the protest for George Floyd, walking in the footsteps of Bland and others for justice. KPRC 2 is partnering with Texas Southern University throughout the month of February for a celebration of Houston Black history.

The idea of forming a band at Texas Southern University derived at Houston College for Negroes during the 1945 - 1946 school year. The marching band had encountered many issues, due to the fact they were a newly found organization. After hiring Butler, the TSU Ocean of Soul made a 180 degree change for the better.
