Wade Phillips will be one of the head coaches when the XFL makes its return in 2023, the league announced on Wednesday.

HOUSTON – After suspending the rest of its seasons due to the coronavirus outbreak in March, the XFL will return in Spring 2022, according to former wrestling star and actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. “As owners, we’re proud to champion our XFL players, coaches, cities and fans into an electrifying 2022 season!” Johnson tweeted. HOUSTON – The XFL is coming back, thanks to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The actor, producer and retired wrestler teamed up with Redbird Capital and became the only bid to purchase the bankrupt league before the auction was slated to begin, according to NBC Sports and Sportico. The group paid $15 million for the league, split evenly with Johnson’s business partner and ex-wife, Dany Garcia. [Johnson, Garcia and Redbird Capital] are the best possible ownership group for the exciting journey ahead,” XFL President Jeffrey Pollack, who oversaw the sale process for the league, told Sportico in a statement. There was no word on when the XFL will make a return.

HOUSTON – This win didn’t come easy for the Houston Roughnecks. Down 14-0 in the second quarter, a touchdown from Nick Holley puts Houston on the board. Houston gained their first lead, 26-23, in the fourth quarter thanks to Phillips. The Roughnecks win came in front of a season-high 19,773 fans at TDECU stadium. HOUSTON – A former Houston Texans player says he is coming back to Houston to play for the Roughnecks XFL this season. Charles James II was a cornerback for the Texans in 2016 before he was waived from the team’s active roster. Coming back to Houston to play for the @XFLRoughnecks this season!
