"Confluence" is currently being developed near UH-DowntownHOUSTON – A new mural is being installed at two of Houston’s bayous near the University of Houston-Downtown dedicated to the migratory birds of Houston’s major waterways. The mural, titled “Confluence,” is being developed by Jane Kim, co-founder of Ink Dwell studio and commissioned by Houston Parks Board and in collaboration with Buffalo Bayou Partnership. It tells a story about birds and how they seasonally change color to attract mates, explained a news release. Measured at about 223 feet in length, the mural’s background will serve as a map of Houston’s bayous. AdThe mural began development this month and is set to complete between four to six weeks, the release said.

HOUSTON – A Jack Yates High School graduate is bringing a massive mural to Houston’s Third Ward community. The Black Lives Matter-inspired street painting is located across from the school on West Alabama Street. Floyd was also a Jack Yates High School graduate. He continued: “I’m doing this because I feel like this will send out a great message to us in this community and also a message to people who don’t think Black Lives Matter. There will be a parade with students from Texas Southern University and Jack Yates High School.

With a little help from their keepers, animals at the Houston Zoo have gotten to work creating the most adorable pieces of art to fundraise money for their friends in the wild. From elephant kisses to hearts painted by sea lions, rhinos and red pandas, the Houston Zoo is offering a range of Valentine’s Day-themed art. The custom art pieces range from $50 - $300 and include an unmatted flat canvas, a photo of the animal artist, and domestic shipping. HOUSTON – After the popularity of the Netflix show ‘Blown Away,’ more and more people have gotten interested in the art of blowing glass. Glass artist Will Jackson at Juggernaut Glass in the Heights took us into his glass-blowing studio to talk about some of the technical aspects of their equipment and tools, the different seasonal craft techniques, and the classes they offer throughout the year. With such a fragile material, often things can break - which can be frustrating…but it also makes the successful projects that much more rewarding and fulfilling. Working glass is a fascinating process, and in Will’s opinion, it’s one of the only art forms where the subject appears more beautiful during creation than the final product. Glassblowers are blessed to be able to see this transitional form, the art is the process, and the byproduct that’s left is the final piece.

HOUSTON – Four new “mini murals” have installed around Houston’s Northside area as part of a project to bring attention to human trafficking. You can find the murals on Airline Drive at Crosstimbers, Airline Drive at Cavalcade, Jensen Drive at Crosstimbers, and Moody Park. A mural in Houston's Northside has the number for the National Human Trafficking Hotline installed to bring awareness of the issue. January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month and January 11 is Human Trafficking Awareness Day. The day also celebrates #WearBlueDay, designed to educate the public to recognize the signs of human trafficking and how to respond to law enforcement.
