HOUSTON – Busted pipes from winter weather are not just impacting homes, but school districts across Southeast Texas. Maintenance crews in many of those districts are working overtime to access the damage and begin the cleanup process. Cy-Fair, Galveston, Goose Creek, Klein and Fort Bend ISD’s are all dealing with similar situations. Fort Bend ISD hopes to resume normal operations on Monday but that decision won’t be made until Sunday night. AdFort Bend ISD hopes to have a better assessment of the damage tomorrow.

HOUSTON – A family is recovering from carbon monoxide poisoning Monday afternoon, according to Cy-Fair Fire Department. The family was reportedly using a charcoal grill to heat their apartment unit at the 8500 block of Easton Commons Drive. Officials said six people, including four children that ages range from 5 to 10 years old, were transported to the hospital. The family was reportedly burning the fire for warmth for about four hours, according to Cy-Fair Fire. These produce carbon monoxide, which is a deadly, colorless and odorless gas,” the department wrote on Twitter.

HOUSTON – Cy-Fair firefighters evacuated an assisted living facility after a fire broke out Tuesday, officials said. Cy-Fair Fire Department said the two staff members were also transported to the hospital, as a precaution. Upon smelling smoke team members immediately called 911 and followed the proper fire evacuation protocol. “Team members carefully escorted residents to safety, and residents were then transported to a sister community in the Houston area. Out of an abundance of caution, one resident and two team members were transported to a local hospital for observation.

Cy-Fair Fire Department said the two staff members were also transported to the hospital, as a precaution. The staff members have since been released. Workers for the facility said displaced residents will be taken to a sister facility during repairs.

This time around, the Falcons get defending Class 6A State Champion North Shore. North Shore pounced on undefeated Pearland Dawson on Thursday night, racing out to a 24-0 halftime lead and eventual 38-7 victory for the Mustangs. On Christmas Eve day, North Shore (12-0) will face Katy Tompkins (10-0) at Legacy Stadium with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. Last year they reached the State Quarterfinals, where they fell to North Shore in a wild 76-49 game. CYPRESS, Texas – A virtual town hall organized by community members of the Cy-Fair Independent School District Monday night aims to get parents, educators and mental health experts and doctors all on the same page. Classes for students Cy-Fair ISD will begin Sept. 8 but before that, the community-organized town hall is a way to discuss concerns across the board. They’re just not,” said Tana Lam, a parent with kids in Cy-Fair ISD. She will be part of the community-organized town hall panel along with educators, a state lawmaker, a pediatrician and a psychologist. The hosts of the town hall say they extended invitations to representatives of Cy-Fair ISD, including board trustees and the superintendent but hadn’t heard back.

CYPRESS, Texas – A Harris County District Court judge granted Cy-Fair American Federation of Teachers a temporary restraining order that states teachers do not have to enter Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District’s school buildings, as the district had required, before Sept. 7. “This is a win for safety, health and common sense. Nearly 7,800 educators in Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District returned to the district’s 91 different campuses Friday for professional development training and new teacher orientation, in spite of a plea from the teacher’s union to delay it. The lawsuitThe teacher’s union filed a lawsuit Friday seeking an injunction to halt the school district’s requirement that all school employees show up to their schools Friday. KPRC 2 reached out to Cy-Fair ISD for comment but district officials said they don’t comment on lawsuits that are pending litigation.

CYPRESS, Texas – A group of community advocates made up of Cy-Fair Independent School District parents, educators, nurses and a psychologist crafted a 10-question anonymous informal survey for teachers, faculty and staff. The goal of the survey was to make sure the decision-makers are keeping their safety in mind as Cy-Fair ISD leaders move forward with reopening plans. LimitationsThe surveyors had to rely on social media and word of mouth as they did not have access to contact information for CFISD staff or school staff statewide. As a result, surveyors feel they have only been able to reach a small percentage of Texas school staff and results may not reflect all perspectives. The creators of the survey said Cy-Fair ISD has done a good job so far but they need to do better.

HOUSTON – The Cy-Fair ISD Board of Trustees has voted to approve a new instructional calendar for the 2020-2021 school year during its regular meeting on Jan. 16. A district-wide committee -- formed in Fall of 2019 between teachers, support staff, and campus administrators -- worked on the calendar for the school year which will begin on Aug. 24, 2020 and will conclude on May 27, 2021. State law mandated that the first day of school cannot start earlier than the fourth Monday in August, and the district must use the allotted 75,600 minutes. There will be two make-up days designated for inclement weather on Feb. 15 and May 28, 2021. The committee also recommended the following holidays for students and teachers:Sept. 4, 2020 – Labor DayNov. 23-27, 2020 – Thanksgiving BreakDec. 24, 2020 to Jan. 4, 2021 – Winter BreakMarch 15-19, 2021 – Spring BreakApril.

The Houston Independent School District paid a total $530,838 for two new scoreboards put up this year at Butler and Barnett Stadiums. At Texas' newest and largest high school stadium in Allen, a Dallas suburb, a custom scoreboard towers 75 feet above a new $60 million football stadium with enough room to seat 18,000 fans. The high-resolution HD screen is 38 feet wide by 23 feet tall, according to Jeff Chaney with the Allen Independent School District athletic department. Katy ISD also funds their mega screen scoreboard at Rhodes stadium with advertising dollars. "All of these are outdoor classrooms as well as football stadiums," said Debbie Decker, Katy ISD athletic director.
