Rather than having extended breaks throughout the school year, Cy-Fair ISD has reserved makeup dates from June 1-30 due to the potential resurgence of COVID-19. The district has allotted an additional 15 minutes of instructional time for elementary and middle schools and 10 minutes of additional instructional time for high schools. Cy-Fair ISD is in the process of creating a survey for parents and staff to provide input on the district’s reopening plans. The unit was among 387 others nationwide to receive the 2019-2020 award. According to Cy-Fair ISD, recipients of the award must meet the minimum criteria including not being on probation and having had at least a “Meets Standards” rating on its most recent evaluation. Each cadet is also required to complete an average of 12 hours of community service for the Distinguished Unit Award and an average of eight hours. Sanders also wrote units receiving the Distinguished Unit Award with Merit are “limited to the very best of the best of our nation’s 890 Air Force JROTC units.”

According to a release by Cy-Fair ISD, fewer than half of one percent of students who take the ACT earn a top score. The ACT is a standardized entrance exam used by universities to make admissions decisions for incoming freshmen. A student’s composite score is the average of the four test scores. According to Cy-Fair ISD, only 4,879 out of nearly 1.8 million students nationwide who took the ACT in February earned a top composite score.

A district-wide committee -- formed in Fall of 2019 between teachers, support staff, and campus administrators -- worked on the calendar for the school year which will begin on Aug. 24, 2020 and will conclude on May 27, 2021. State law mandated that the first day of school cannot start earlier than the fourth Monday in August, and the district must use the allotted 75,600 minutes. There will be two make-up days designated for inclement weather on Feb. 15 and May 28, 2021. The committee also recommended the following holidays for students and teachers:Sept. 4, 2020 – Labor DayNov. 23-27, 2020 – Thanksgiving BreakDec. 24, 2020 to Jan. 4, 2021 – Winter BreakMarch 15-19, 2021 – Spring BreakApril.
