The school district said its bus was hit by another vehicle. Firefighters said 16 high school students and two adults on board the bus were evaluated at the scene. Grace Jester, 17, looks like any other Cypress Ranch High School student. “I want Cy-Fair to designate Grace as a special education student,” said Steve Jester, Grace’s dad. HOUSTON – The Texas State Teachers Association announced Monday that its members had reported hundreds of COVID-19 protocol discrepancies or violations in the first couple weeks of the school year. In the Houston area, the most complaints of violations were submitted by teachers in the Cy-Fair Independent School District with 210 reports of violations since the school district began the academic year last week. HOUSTON – As students in the state’s largest school district started their virtual classes Tuesday, some parents reported having trouble connecting to the district’s website. KPRC 2 attempted to visit the official website for the Houston Independent School District several times Tuesday morning and received a runtime error and a 504 error. They will all be in virtual learning until at least Oct. 19, when some are scheduled to return to in-person learning. According to Lathan, about 12,000 students still do not have devices for virtual learning, but that does not mean they will be left behind. The district launched 36 digital learning centers for kids who still do not have what they need to participate in virtual school.

CYPRESS, Texas – A virtual town hall organized by community members of the Cy-Fair Independent School District Monday night aims to get parents, educators and mental health experts and doctors all on the same page. Classes for students Cy-Fair ISD will begin Sept. 8 but before that, the community-organized town hall is a way to discuss concerns across the board. They’re just not,” said Tana Lam, a parent with kids in Cy-Fair ISD. She will be part of the community-organized town hall panel along with educators, a state lawmaker, a pediatrician and a psychologist. The hosts of the town hall say they extended invitations to representatives of Cy-Fair ISD, including board trustees and the superintendent but hadn’t heard back.

HOUSTON – The Texas Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District in a fierce battle between the district and the teachers union over returning to campus for training ahead of the start of the school year. On Friday, a Harris County District Judge granted the Cy-Fair American Federation of Teachers (Cy-Fair AFT) a temporary restraining order, which prevented teachers from being forced to physically be in a school building before Sept. 7. However, per the Supreme Court’s ruling Sunday, teachers must report to work. We will consider our options in the coming days.”Cowart said the teachers union is still concerned and worries about how schools will enforce a mask policy. “Friday was supposed to mark the return to campus for Cy-Fair teachers and staff who were preparing to start the new school year and welcome back kids, until a trial court unlawfully ordered the campus shut down at the request of a teachers’ union.

CYPRESS, Texas – A Harris County District Court judge granted Cy-Fair American Federation of Teachers a temporary restraining order that states teachers do not have to enter Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District’s school buildings, as the district had required, before Sept. 7. “This is a win for safety, health and common sense. Nearly 7,800 educators in Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District returned to the district’s 91 different campuses Friday for professional development training and new teacher orientation, in spite of a plea from the teacher’s union to delay it. The lawsuitThe teacher’s union filed a lawsuit Friday seeking an injunction to halt the school district’s requirement that all school employees show up to their schools Friday. KPRC 2 reached out to Cy-Fair ISD for comment but district officials said they don’t comment on lawsuits that are pending litigation.

Freestone says going back to school as the number of COVID-19 cases continues is not safe. Freestone teaches English at Jersey Village High School. Cy-Fair ISD is allowing parents to send their children back to school or learn from home. “(At) high school and middle school campuses, students are only going to be 3-feet apart not six,” she said. However, on Monday, Freestone and several other educators will be protesting at the Cy-Fair School board meeting.

Spotlight on what Alvin ISD is doing to prepareIt’s been a busy summer for Alvin ISD school nurse Brandi Goldston. “We have been looking at this ever since march when everything was shut down initially,” said Brandi Goldston, School Nurse Alvin ISD. The CDC requests that each school develop a proactive plan for when a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19. For all school districts, impacted staff, students, and parents will be notified of any potential COVID exposure. Since exposure to COVID is a big part of quarantine, we wanted to know what qualifies as “exposure” to COVID?

CYPRESS, Texas – A group of community advocates made up of Cy-Fair Independent School District parents, educators, nurses and a psychologist crafted a 10-question anonymous informal survey for teachers, faculty and staff. The goal of the survey was to make sure the decision-makers are keeping their safety in mind as Cy-Fair ISD leaders move forward with reopening plans. LimitationsThe surveyors had to rely on social media and word of mouth as they did not have access to contact information for CFISD staff or school staff statewide. As a result, surveyors feel they have only been able to reach a small percentage of Texas school staff and results may not reflect all perspectives. The creators of the survey said Cy-Fair ISD has done a good job so far but they need to do better.

Cy-Fair ISD has revealed its amended calendar for the upcoming school year, and not much looks different from before. Rather than having extended breaks throughout the school year, Cy-Fair ISD has reserved makeup dates from June 1-30 due to the potential resurgence of COVID-19. The district has allotted an additional 15 minutes of instructional time for elementary and middle schools and 10 minutes of additional instructional time for high schools. Cy-Fair ISD is in the process of creating a survey for parents and staff to provide input on the district’s reopening plans. The Cy-Fair High School Air Force JROTC unit has won the Distinguished Unit Award for the fourth year in a row, Cy-Fair ISD announced. The unit was among 387 others nationwide to receive the 2019-2020 award. According to Cy-Fair ISD, recipients of the award must meet the minimum criteria including not being on probation and having had at least a “Meets Standards” rating on its most recent evaluation. Each cadet is also required to complete an average of 12 hours of community service for the Distinguished Unit Award and an average of eight hours. Sanders also wrote units receiving the Distinguished Unit Award with Merit are “limited to the very best of the best of our nation’s 890 Air Force JROTC units.”

Gabriel Bolanos, a junior at Cypress Ranch High School, earned the highest possible composite score of 36 on the ACT. According to a release by Cy-Fair ISD, fewer than half of one percent of students who take the ACT earn a top score. The ACT is a standardized entrance exam used by universities to make admissions decisions for incoming freshmen. A student’s composite score is the average of the four test scores. According to Cy-Fair ISD, only 4,879 out of nearly 1.8 million students nationwide who took the ACT in February earned a top composite score.

HOUSTON – The Cy-Fair ISD Board of Trustees has voted to approve a new instructional calendar for the 2020-2021 school year during its regular meeting on Jan. 16. A district-wide committee -- formed in Fall of 2019 between teachers, support staff, and campus administrators -- worked on the calendar for the school year which will begin on Aug. 24, 2020 and will conclude on May 27, 2021. State law mandated that the first day of school cannot start earlier than the fourth Monday in August, and the district must use the allotted 75,600 minutes. There will be two make-up days designated for inclement weather on Feb. 15 and May 28, 2021. The committee also recommended the following holidays for students and teachers:Sept. 4, 2020 – Labor DayNov. 23-27, 2020 – Thanksgiving BreakDec. 24, 2020 to Jan. 4, 2021 – Winter BreakMarch 15-19, 2021 – Spring BreakApril.
