More than 8,000 acres of saltwater wetlands and more than 80,000 of freshwater wetlands have been lost in the Galveston Bay system over the last two decades. The staggering numbers come from the Galveston Bay Foundation, which is actively working to improve the situation, in part because the wetlands serve as a habitat for wildlife and provide a buffer for storm surge. As the wetlands vanish, we become more vulnerable to flooding and water quality issues.

GM Meetings in Scottsdale had to wrap up a day early thanks to widespread...uhh...gastrointestinal distress, as was reported over there. In the meantime, GM Dana Brown spoke with assorted media present and revealed some nuggets about the Astros’ strategy this offseason.

The Astros, as you know, were on the cusp of another trip to the World Series which would have been their third straight but those plans were derailed by the Texas Rangers when they came back to Houston and took down the Astros in the ALCS winning game 6 and again in game 7 that closed the door on the 2023 season. The big news after their elimination of course was Dusty Baker announcing his retirement after 26 years as a Major League manager.

The Texans will have a lot of questions to be answered as camp begins and the countdown to the season begins.

The Texans closed out their off-season program with a mandatory mini-camp last week. Training camp opens July 26.

Thousands of students started their fall semester in these last few days. Happy back-to-school season to Klein, Galena and Fort Bend ISD among many many others. I’m sure you’ve definitely seen the traffic pattern change in your morning drive. It is BUSY out there. I remember looking at Spring Cypress Road near Klein Cain High School and it was dark red. Drivers, now that it’s getting a bit more congested out there, you’ve got to leave with extra time in the morning. We have so much going on early in the morning in our neighborhoods with kids headed back to class. School buses are running, kids riding their bikes or walking to school...the last thing you want to do is to rush out the door and speed down your neighborhood streets. Let’s do our best to keep our students safe out there!

We’ve been recognizing National Work Zone Awareness week which kicked off on Monday, aimed at keeping construction workers safe on our highways.

April is the month when we focus on spreading awareness about distracted driving, and this message isn’t just targeting teens -- everyone, no matter what age is guilty of not giving their full attention to the roadway at some point or another.

It was the week many Houstonians were looking forward to. On Monday, the eastbound tunnel of the Memorial Land Bridge officially opened to traffic.
