HOUSTON – Question: How’s the progress coming along with the work on the Ship Channel Bridge?
Answer: Here is a statement the Harris County Toll Road Authority provided regarding the progress on the Sam Houston Tollway Ship Channel Bridge Program:
- “The project reached a milestone a few weeks ago - early October 2022. Construction crews began the concrete pour of one of the main span bridge pylons located on the northside of the project. This is one of four of the large footings which will hold up the new bridge. The southbound bridge is expected to open to traffic in 2025 and the northbound bridge is expected to open 2028 completing the program. The public should feel confident as we move forward on the project.”
A while back, we learned a design flaw caused a big delay to fix the East Beltway Ship Channel Bridge, so the new project design will include shoulders on both side for emergencies, it will have a total of 4 four 12 foot wide lanes, increasing capacity to meet future demands, and the entrance points will be less steep to increase visibility for drivers.
