Rome mayor says 300,000 liters of water wasted in Trevi Fountain protest
The mayor of Rome said that some 300,000 liters of water was wasted after climate activists from the Ultima Generazione poured “vegetable charcoal” into the historic Trevi Fountain on Sunday, May 21. “Today 9 activists poured charcoal into #FontanadiTrevi. Thanks to the timely intervention of the local police, the worst was avoided. An intervention is now needed that will commit public resources and lead to the waste of 300,000 liters of water,” Mayor Roberto Gualtieri said on Twitter. Ultima Generazione said the action was part of their “Non Paghiamo Il Fossile” campaign,, which calls on the Italian government to stop funding fossil fuels. Gualtieri said cleaning works at the historic fountain were finished on Sunday. No permanent damage was caused to the landmark. Credit: Ultima Generazione via Storyful
