FULL SHOW: Explore the history and meaning behind Juneteenth with Houston Life

Join the Houston Life team in exploring Houston’s connection to Juneteenth with a trip to The Heritage Society at Sam Houston Park in Downtown Houston. The site features several historical homes that are available to tour including the 1870 Yates House, which was the home of Reverend Jack Yates, a freed slave and influential member of Houston's Freedman's Town. His great-granddaughter, Martha Whiting-Goddard walks us through the family’s home. Then, go inside the Kellum-Noble House, which used to be a working plantation and was part of the slave trade route. We also explore the Houston Museum of African American Culture, share Juneteenth book recommendations for children and meet the artist behind the ‘Absolute Equality’ Juneteenth mural project, Reginald C. Adams. Then, we introduce you to a local barber using his shop, Chophouse Barber Company, to bring the community together.
