HOUSTON – Houstonians were caught by surprise on Monday evening after a storm dropped pea-sized hail over the area.
KPRC 2 staff members and viewers were quick to drop their photos via Click2Pins.
However, the hail may look pea-sized, but according to the National Weather Service, the pebble-sized ice crystals are called graupel. Graupel is soft, small pellets formed when supercooled water droplets freeze onto a snow crystal, a process called riming. Graupel is also called snow pellets or soft hail, as the graupel particles are particularly fragile and generally disintegrate when handled.
