HOUSTON – It has been an active January in Houston! We broke records during our freeze, and last week we had over a foot of rainfall in some spots. Keeping on track with our active month, we are already tracking our next chance for heavy rainfall. Right now, there is a low flood threat for Southeast Texas, which includes Houston. All flood warnings are set to expire Wednesday, but we’ll need to monitor how this next round affects our northern rivers and bayous.
Disclaimer: The forecast models you are about to look at are for Saturday, which is still several days away. These times likely will shift as we get closer to Saturday and refine the forecast. In general, cold fronts speed up. This means when this is updated, more times than not it would show our rainfall arriving earlier.
Friday Night:
As early as Friday night some showers may begin to move in from the west as a Pacific front moves through Texas. These would be prefrontal showers, nothing too heavy.
Saturday Morning:
Most of the showers and storms now look to move in overnight into Saturday. The heaviest of the showers will be by the I-35 corridor around 4AM.
By 10AM the heavier rainfall will be moving east into our NW counties.
Saturday Afternoon:
The heaviest of the rainfall will be moving through during the middle of the day on Saturday.
By 3PM Saturday most of the heavy rainfall will be well to our east and entering Louisiana. A few lingering showers may be possible.
With our current timeline, all activities after 3PM should be good to go by Saturday afternoon! If you have an outdoor event Saturday evening, I’d recommend having the reception site covered for the rainfall to avoid mud. Other than the mud, any outdoor events should be fine.
Forecast Rainfall:
Right now our forecast rainfall shows widespread 1-3″ across SE Texas, but even 4″ isn’t out of the question. In a thunderstorm we can see higher totals. This can lead to localized street flooding.
Sunday’s Forecast:
The rain will move out Saturday afternoon leaving us with a cool and windy Sunday.
