HOUSTON – If you have lived through a hot Houston summer, you have likely been through a number of heat advisories for intense heat and the humidity that makes the “feels like” numbers well into the triple digits.
Generally, the heat advisories (issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) office locally in Dickinson) kick in around 10-11 a.m. and cover the hottest hours of the day in the middle and late afternoon/early evening.

They generally expire around 6-7 p.m. on average after the hottest summer hours of 3-5 p.m. For example, here is what our heat index or the “feels like” temperatures are forecast to be at 4 p.m.:
Today’s situation is a little different. Our heat advisory extends until 10 p.m., well after sunset! Why is that? Well, as you can see in the above picture, our intense heat and humidity will max out around 4 p.m. at 110°-111°. Normally, once we get into the evening and especially after sunset (which is 7:58 p.m. tonight), the intensity of the heat/humid combo will lessen and the advisory will expire.

However, because we may see the hottest day of the year today, the NWS decided to extend the advisory because of the lingering effect of such a sizzler of a day. Check out the forecasted “feels like” temps at 9 p.m. tonight:
Unfortunately, we’ll likely see at least one more day of heat advisories tomorrow and possibly again on Wednesday so we’ll see how late the NWS will extend them tomorrow.
So for you night owls trying to catch a glimpse of the full Super Blue moon tonight, know that you’ll still be under a heat advisory if you head out before 10 p.m. to sweat out the perfect shot!
