HOUSTON – October is finally here!
Get the 12-foot skeleton ready, head to a pumpkin patch and hope for cooler weather! Most of September we saw iced-coffee weather, but this month we should see at least a few warm pumpkin spiced latte mornings. Here’s what we can typically expect to see the month of October.
If you’re seeking out cooler weather, we do see a decent cooling through the month. Our average high drops to 78° by the end of the month. However, we nearly always hit 90° in October. Our last year to not hit the 90-degree mark in October was 2001.
Our average low drops to 56° - brrr! Although our 10 day does not have a cool down, do not fret! Every year since 1964 we have had temperatures hit 54° or below by the end of the month.
One big reason why we get cooler is that we see less sunlight through the month. You will start to notice our sunsets getting much earlier. By Halloween sunset is at 6:35 p.m., and our sunrises are after 7:30 a.m.
The full moon this month falls on October 17. This is called the “hunter’s moon.” This is also a supermoon, the third we have seen so far this year. The fourth and final supermoon will come in November.
Another trait of October is the end of hurricane season for Houston. Although the official end to hurricane season is November 30, we see ours end this month. Once our first fall front moves through, we are in the clear as the fronts steer any tropical systems away from us. The latest tropical system to hit us was Hurricane Jerry on October 15/16, 1989.
