What to expect as we step into November in Houston

Here’s what to expect this month

HOUSTON – November is here in Houston!

Get excited for high-stakes football games, Butterball turkeys, and strong cold fronts! October was one of the warmest on record for Houston, but this month we can expect some major cold fronts. Here’s what we typically see in the month of November.

Temperature Changes:

If you’re seeking out cooler weather, we do see a decent cooling through the month. Our average high drops to 68° by the end of the month. Another big change is that we have never hit 90° in November! In the weather department, we call this month “No Ninety November!” This doesn’t mean we can’t be warm as we have hit 89° several times through the years.

On average our first day with a low temperature below 40° falls on November 15th. By the end of the month, our average low temperature drops to the upper 40s.

Remember we are never perfectly average. Last month we were above average (by quite a bit!). This month the Weather Prediction Center indicates that all of Texas will be above average for temperatures and below average for rainfall. This means we will likely see our drought worsen as we go through the month.

Daylight Changes:

Daylight saving time officially ends this weekend! Make sure you turn your clocks back an hour before you go to bed Saturday night. Most devices will automatically change this for you, but some ovens, microwaves, old cars, and wall clocks will need to be set back manually!

MORE: Set your clocks back this weekend, Houston!

This is because 2 a.m. becomes 1 a.m. on Sunday, which means we actually get an extra hour of sleep. This is also a good time to change the batteries on your smoke and CO2 alarms.

This extra hour of sleep means big changes for our sunrise and sunset. Early risers typically love this time change because our sunrise is in the 6 a.m. hour starting Sunday. Night owls often do not like the time change as our sunset will also be an hour earlier at 5:32 p.m.

By the end of the month, our sunrise is at 6:58 a.m. and our sunset is at 5:21 p.m.

Final Supermoon of the year:

The full moon this month falls on November 15th. This is called the “beaver moon.” The full moon in November is called the beaver moon because this is the time of year when the critters are particularly active.

This moon is also a supermoon, the fourth and final we have seen so far this year. This means the moon will appear bigger and brighter.

One drawback of our supermoon is that it will make the Leonids Meteor Shower harder to see. The meteor shower will peak on Sunday, November 17th.

Hurricane Season Officially Ends:

Another trait of November is the official end of hurricane season, which falls on November 30th. This means we have another six months until hurricane season starts again on June 1st, 2025.

The peak tropical season is September 10th. (Copyright 2024 by KPRC Click2Houston - All rights reserved.)

If you’re decorating your house for Thanksgiving (or skipping ahead to the holidays) we’d love to see it! Send it in to Click2Pins and you might see it on air!

Have a wonderful November!
