HOUSTON, Texas – In the Autumn we can see major temperature swings, so it’s no surprise Thanksgiving has quite the range of temperature extremes here in Houston.
The hottest Thanksgiving we have ever seen was 87° in 1973. Back then our parade was called the Foley’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!
The coldest Thanksgiving in Houston was a frigid 23° in 1911. November 1911 was a historically fascinating month for the weather. On 11/11/11 the Great Blue Norther pushed through the US dramatically dropping our temperatures just two weeks before our coldest Thanksgiving. In 1911 Thanksgiving also came very late, falling on the fifth Thursday of the month.
Unfortunately, in 2021, the HEB Thanksgiving Day Parade in Houston had to be cancelled due to heavy downpours. That year we set the record for the rainiest Thanksgiving with 1.87″ falling at IAH.
Last year, we had a really chilly Thanksgiving! Our morning low was 40° and we hardly warmed up with our afternoon high reaching only 56° - nearly 15° below normal. We had mostly cloudy skies with passing light rain showers. At IAH we saw 0.03″ of rainfall.
Thanksgiving is really late this year, so historically speaking we should be a little cooler! In fact, for Nov. 28 our average high temperature is 69° and our average low is 49°. We will certainly not be breaking any records this year. Although we did have early morning showers, rainfall accumulations were less than a quarter inch. IAH officially saw 0.01″.
Knowing our Thanksgiving climatology makes me much more thankful for our forecast! This year our Thanksgiving afternoon is amazing. It’s perfect for a post-feast walk.
