Sure, Houston was cold this morning, but was it THAT cold?

Only a few areas hit 32 degrees or less this morning, what caused the rest of the region to stay just above?

Yes ...it certainly was cold this morning, but some folks were a little taken aback by the little “frost” that was previously expected.

You can see there are some areas across our northern counties (which were the ones under freeze warnings this morning) that did get down to freezing and in a few spots, a degree or two below.

However, most spots stayed above freezing. Why is that?

One of the biggest reasons is the wind! How’s that? The wind speed stayed around 10-15 mph for most of the early morning hours, which is when temperatures usually bottom out each morning.

When the wind is stirring up the air, it doesn’t allow it to reach ideal radiational cooling conditions.

What does that mean? The perfect cooling conditions are clear skies (which we had), cold air (check), and calm winds (whoops, that’s the one piece we were missing).

The jet stream was just a tad too fast for us to see calm winds, and the high pressure that’s bringing us plenty of sunshine today was too far west to help to kill the wind (which is what high pressure does when it is directly overhead).

Don’t worry cold weather fans, we’ll see more opportunities to see some frosty and freezing mornings this winter!
