Warm in December in Houston? Why and when the cool weather will return

A cold front is coming

It's been more sweaty than cool so far this December

HOUSTON, Texas – I thought this was hilariously gross and strangely accurate. We have been warm, muggy, and not pleasant outside.

It’s mid-December, which means we should be wearing sweaters and drinking hot chocolate. Ideally, we are decorating the yard with lights while wearing a beanie.

This was not the case for the last several days in Houston.

Although last week we had highs in the mid-60s, starting Saturday, highs have been in the upper-70s and lower-80s.

It’s been warm, but we have also been muggy.

Winds have been coming from the southeast, and the Gulf flow enhances our moisture.

This is why we’ve needed the extra hair spray.

December Highs

Now, you might see that we have been well above average and scratch your head a little. We don’t LOOK that above normal with the highs, but we also have to look at the lows.

Not only have we seen highs, we expect to see in mid-October, but we’ve also seen very high lows.

Our normal high temperature this time of year should be 65° but lately, we have been seeing morning low temperatures in the upper-60s to nearly 70°.

If you’re wondering, we should be waking up in the mid-40s. We are waking up about 25° warmer than normal. YUCK!

Lows This Morning

Now, we do have good news - if you’ve been following our forecasts, we do have a significant cold front coming Wednesday.

This will bring an isolated storm chance Wednesday afternoon, but it will also dramatically drop our temperatures.

Highs will return to the 60s and lows will head back to the 40s. This is where we should be.

Forecast Highs

Now, here’s where the sad part comes in, we are not expecting the chilly weather to last long.

In fact, the entire United States is forecast to be well above normal as we close out 2024.

Long Range Forecast

Don’t let the long-range forecast get you down. We are still expecting to have a really nice weekend ahead. Get out and enjoy it while we have it.
