Snow in Houston usually happens once every four years and 2025 may be a year we see snow in January! It’s important to remember we are talking about the forecast for over a week from now, so there is a lot of uncertainty and things can change.
I want to start with what we are certain of - next week we will see a significant cool down! We are expecting several pushes of cold air, which will likely bring many to at least freezing by the middle of next week. As for what we do not know, is just how cold it will get! Will we drop to the 20s or just make it to freezing? Another big question is whether or not we will have any precipitation, and when it comes will we be below freezing. If so, we could see some snowfall! Currently our forecast still brings afternoons all next week back to the 40s which would mean it’s not a multi-day freeze, just freezing mornings.
We will have several pushes of cold air. Our first strong cold front will push in late Sunday bringing our temperatures down to highs in the 50s for Monday and Tuesday next week. We’ll have another front mid-week and it looks like we could see a freezing morning by Wednesday at the earliest.
Right now, Thursday looks to be our coldest morning with the freeze line reaching the coast. This also correlates with when some models are bringing the chance for precipitation.
I like to call this a “non-zero” chance for snow. I say this because the chances are very low, but there is certainly a little chance! 99.9% of the days in Houston there is a firm 0% chance for snowfall so this does mean something.
If conditions are just right and we see below freezing temperatures at the same time we have moisture move in next week we could see sleet, freezing rain, or even snow!
So what does this mean? Right now you should stay aware of our forecast. We will likely hit freezing next week, which means we’ll ask you to cover plants, and potentially wrap your pipes. If you’ve thrown out the foam pipe covers from years past, it’s not a bad idea to grab some from the store. If you don’t need it next week you could certainly need it another time this winter.
I know freezing weather can feel scary (especially after our horrific freeze in 2021) but right now there is no need to panic. Our forecast is still calling for afternoons in the 40s which would allow us to thaw daily.
We’ll update you throughout the week with all the changes in our forecast.
