Why Sunday’s severe weather has a low tornado threat for Houston

Stay weather aware Sunday Afternoon

Storm Threat Sunday

HOUSTON – After last week’s tornado outbreak, we’re now tracking another severe weather threat. Thankfully this system isn’t as intense, lacking the same level of instability and wind shear. Wind shear is the change in winds and direction with height, it is a key ingredient to produce tornado genesis.

However, Sunday’s storms still carry enough energy to produce severe weather. Instead of numerous tornadoes, the greater risk is for frequent lightning strikes and damaging winds.

Severe Threat Sunday

Although all of the area has a threat, the largest threat is northeast of Houston. Locations like Huntsville, Conroe, Livingston, and Liberty should stay especially weather-aware.

Timing looks to bring the line of storms through Houston from noon- 4 p.m. and reach the coast from 3 p.m. -7 p.m. This timing can and will change as we get closer to Sunday. Cold fronts are known to speed up so if we see changes in timing, 80% of the time it will happen a little earlier.
