HOUSTON, Texas – The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has issued a weather watch ahead of the anticipated cold weather this week.

ERCOT issued the weather watch from Feb. 19-21 citing the possibility of “extreme cold weather across the ERCOT region, higher electrical demand, and the potential for lower reserves.”

An ERCOT Weather Watch is an advance notification of forecasted significant weather with higher electrical demand and the potential for lower reserves.

“ERCOT is monitoring weather conditions closely and will deploy all available tools to manage the grid, continuing a reliability-first approach to operations. In anticipation of the extreme cold weather, ERCOT is coordinating preparation efforts with the Texas Energy Reliability Council, the Public Utility Commission of Texas, the Texas Department of Emergency Management, and other state agencies, as well as with Market Participants,” the news release said, in part.

Although grid conditions are expected to be normal during the weather watch, ERCOT is urging Texans to monitor its grid conditions in real time at ercot.com.

According to our KPRC 2 meteorologists, on Thursday, Houston and most parts of Southeast Texas will experience a drop in temperatures. Starting Wednesday, temperatures will drop into the low 30s and the mid-20s by Thursday.

Although it will feel icy cold, there will be no snow like we saw last month. But, you will still need to take the necessary precautions like covering your plants and making sure your outside pets have proper shelter.
