HOUSTON – It’s shaping up to be an interesting day as temperatures soar and a rare celestial event graces the night sky. KPRC 2 meteorologist Justin Stapleton shares what’s in store.
Near-record heat could tie a 1942 high
As a strong south-southwest wind sweeps in, temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 80s. If the mercury hits 88 degrees today, it would tie the record set way back in 1942. So, get ready for a hot afternoon, but don’t worry, it’s temporary, cooler days are just around the corner as we approach the weekend.
Don’t miss the lunar spectacle tonight
A total lunar eclipse is set to transform the full moon into a stunning blood orange hue tonight. The celestial show begins with a partial eclipse at 1:26 a.m., reaching totality at 2 a.m., and wrapping up by 2:32 a.m. However, thick cloud cover might cast a shadow on this spectacle. Fingers crossed for some clear breaks in the sky!
Weekend cooldown and travel considerations
Look forward to a more comfortable weekend with temperatures dropping to around 80 degrees on Saturday, along with a slight chance of morning showers.
Travelers, take note: a front moving through could trigger widespread severe weather from the Midwest down to the Deep South. Those heading toward St. Louis, Mississippi, or Alabama should stay alert.
