Houston starts the weekend off windy. What that means for SE Texas’s wildfire risk

As winds increase and moisture decrease the weather will be conducive for wildfires.

HOUSTON, Texas – Friday, winds gusted over 60 mph across the Texas Panhandle, and while southeast Texas winds aren’t that strong, they are noticeable.

From Huntsville to the Houston metro down to the coast, the southwest wind is gusting 20-30 mph.

Gust extremely high across the Texas panhandle.

While the winds may make you hold your hat extra tight, they are causing more significant problems across the Lone Star State—the combination of strong winds, dry vegetation, and low humidity is leading to grass fires in the Texas Panhandle. The National Weather Service extending the Red Flag Warning into most SE Texas starting Saturday afternoon and ending at 9 PM.

I suggest limiting activities that encourage burning. Any flame that sparks may quickly accelerate.

Winds will begin to ease Sunday, but moisture will remain low.
