Fire danger alert: Strong winds and dry air heighten risk across Texas, including Houston

Strong and dry northwest winds will make for another breezy afternoon with a high fire risk

HOUSTON – KPRC’s meteorologist Justin Stapleton has detailed a fire weather warning for the entire area through tonight. Here’s what you need to know:

Fire weather warnings in effect today

Red flag and fire weather warnings are currently in place until 7 p.m. tonight. These warnings affect several western counties. Low humidity and winds gusting up to 30 mph make for potentially hazardous conditions, so exercise extra caution, particularly if engaging in outdoor activities involving fire.

Temperature and wind changes

Expect some showers during the morning hours as a weak front moves through. By the afternoon, temperatures are set to range from 78 to 82 degrees. There's a shift in the wind direction, moving from the south to the northwest, and it’s expected to pick up speed to 15 to 20 mph. So, it might be wise to secure loose outdoor items.

What’s ahead: Weekend weather

Looking into the weekend, the forecast suggests a return to warmer temperatures, with highs reaching into the low to mid-80s. However, there's a chance of showers and thunderstorms from Sunday night into Monday. The Houston Astros' home opener on Thursday might see some rain, so keep an eye on the updates.
