HOUSTON – HPD Chief Charles A. McClelland Jr. will hold a town hall meeting Feb. 7 and said it's just one way for the community to provide feedback.
"We work on police & community relations every day, every week, every month," he said.
McClelland is a special guest on this week's "Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall" and talks about a number of issues, how tensions in the community can be eased, $5,000 incentives being offered to new HPD recruits, potential changes in HPD training as a result of community protests around the country and in Houston and much more.
Also on this week's program is Craig B. Clayton Sr., founder of RespectMatters.org and director and diversity strategist for UH Bauer College of Business. He has impressive insight into why conflicts between police and the community happen and gives great examples about how it can be eradicated.
He said much as to do with which intelligence is being used.
"Emotional intelligence means you have to be savvy enough to understand not just your hot buttons emotively, but the people you're dealing," Clayton said. "You have to know how to reign in some of those issues when a part of our natural wiring takes us down a path we shouldn't be going down."
He's only in the fifth grade but Chase Roberts has a great future after winning this year's Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition. He said he enjoyed winning but the hoopla surrounding his win has been another story.
"I've had to get up at 5 in the morning on the weekend to make appearances! It hasn't been fun!" he said.
With or without the attention that goes with his win, the future is bright for this Cornelius Elementary student who loves science.
"Houston Newsmakers" airs at 10 a.m. Sunday after "Meet the Press."
