Tarkington ISD canceled classes on Monday following power surges that cut off electricity to the middle school campus, the district's internet hub. The surges severed phone lines and internet services, and due to outdated equipment, components need replacement before power is restored.

Twelve schools are on the list for closure or consolidation in the Houston Independent School District. The Board of Managers is set to vote on the proposal tonight, Feb. 26, 2026 at 5 p.m..
