HOUSTON – Texas' proof of vehicle inspection and registration are being combined into one sticker beginning Sunday.
The state is calling it the "Two Steps, One Sticker" system. An inspection will still be needed to register your car, but one sticker will cover both requirements. State officials say this is designed to cut down on fake inspections and improve air quality.
"Just like with car insurance, with inspection status a notice of pass or fail will be electronically verified when you renew your vehicle registration," said State Sen. Royce West.
If your inspection is current this year, then you will get to re-register when your registration expires. When your expiration date comes up after March 2016, you will have 90 days to get an inspection before renewing your registration.
Texas will join more than two dozen states that use a single-sticker system. The actual inspection sticker as we know it will be eliminated.
The cost for your inspection and registration will not change.
