Health Hazard: Dangers of falling furniture

Recent statistics show an alarming and dangerous trend involving furniture and young children.

"We have a child in an emergency room every 24 minutes on average, and a child dies every two weeks from furniture tipping over on them," says Consumer Products Safety Commissioner Marietta Robinson.

2-year-old Ted McGee of Minneapolis was a recent victim, killed when a dresser he was climbing toppled onto him. His case and others have led the CPSC to re-emphasize its "Anchor-It" program.

"People don't even know it's there, in terms of the danger, but secondly, children love to climb, particularly young children. It's part of their development," Robinson notes.

Do-it-yourself anchoring kits are at least available at hardware stores and online, or you can hire hire a certified professional child-proofer.
