Thousands of free HISD uniforms being distributed

HOUSTON – Thousands of free school uniforms were being distributed at seven locations across the city Friday and one location on Saturday, Houston Independent School District officials said.

The district, along with county and city officials, will be at the following location from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday:

  • Denver Harbor Multi-Service Center
    6402 Market Street
    Houston, Tx. 77020
    832-395-0895

HISD said the students must be present to be fitted in order to receive the free uniforms.

Hundreds of people lined up at 5 a.m. Friday at the Denver Harbor Multi Service Center. Families said they were so grateful for the help from HISD after the storm. Many said they lost their homes when floodwaters invaded their homes.

"When this happened, I thought, 'How am I going to buy uniforms, school supplies (and) pay my rent?' It was too much," said parent Sonia Palacios.

"It's going to help a lot. I have nieces and grandkids. And (I'm) just trying to help as a community and as a family," Glenda Hawkins said.

Families were also able to get some food, water and clothing for the children. School officials promised free breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as bus rides -- anything to get students back to class as soon as possible.

"Every single house over there was just flooded out. They lost everything, so it's a good thing this is going on in the neighborhood so they can take part in what's being offered," said volunteer Angela Isart.

The school district said it has relaxed its uniform policy until January 2018, but that students may wear their uniforms to school if they have already purchased or received them.
