If you’re a dim sum regular, you know part of the fun is being able to try and enjoy many different bites all in one meal in a family setting. If you feel daunted by all the choices, Chris Shepherd shows you how it’s done at two of his favorite dim sum restaurants in Houston.
Dim sum means “touch the heart” and refers to small plates or snacks served with tea.
In this episode of “Eat Like a Local with Chris Shepherd”, Shepherd explores the dim sum cart service at one of the most popular spots in town. He also shows you how easy it is to order dim sum off the menu at restaurant he’s been going to since it opened in 2008.

HK Dim Sum
9889 Bellaire Blvd #110 | Houston
HK Dim Sum is owned by Lisa Yang. She told Shepherd her husband was a dim sum professional in Hong Kong. They moved from Hong Kong to Toronto, Canada where they remained in the food industry. Yang eventually moved to Houston in 2000 and then in 2008 decided to start her own restaurant featuring the authentic flavors of Hong Kong’s dim sum.
She makes everything on site, including a special dumpling dough that Shepherd said he tried repeatedly to replicate without success. Yang eventually gave him the dough and then taught Shepherd how she makes it for the mixed meat dumplings.
“Your textures and ingredients are pretty much perfect,” Shepherd told Yang.
Fung’s Kitchen
7320 Southwest Fwy #115 | Houston
On weekends, the dim sum cart service at Fung’s Kitchen doesn’t stop rolling. The restaurant, which opened in 1990, has grown and now seats 600 people.
Hoi Fung is the owner. He has a son who opened another dim sum restaurant in Katy and a daughter who’s also in the food industry.
But family goes beyond blood at Fung’s. Shepherd noticed many of the employees at the restaurant are familiar and have been there a longtime.
“All the employees seem like our family,” said Fung.
In addition to dim sum, customers can also order fresh seafood. Fung’s has live tanks of shrimp, lobsters, crabs, and eel.
