Widow of slain husband speaks out

Memorial held for Robert Batiste

HOUSTON – The wife of a man shot to death in southeast Houston is speaking out about her husband's death.

Friends and family gathered Friday to hold a memorial at the spot where Robert Batiste was killed on Martin Luther King Boulevard and Pershing.

Batiste was shot and killed while he was walking down Martin Luther King Boulevard last weekend. The shooting was caught on security camera from a cellphone store across the street. The owner gave it to police and he hopes it will help solve the crime.

"We want the shooter taken off the street and anybody else involved in a murder of a man only walking to the store," community activist Quannell X said.

Batiste's widow, Shanae Seafous, said she doesn't understand why anybody would kill her husband.

"He was a good father, good person, kind-hearted, willing to help any and everybody," said Seafous.

Area residents and business leaders said they believe this is another example of crime out of control in their neighborhood.

"It's just ridiculous. All day long something is going on on this block," business owner Lisa Randle said.

According to Houston police, crime is down 21 percent this year in the Southcrest neighborhood, which is closest to where Batiste was killed. But that number provides little comfort to the family who said justice will ultimately be served and the killer will be caught.

Police are also looking for a woman who was walking with Batiste on the night of the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to give Crime Stoppers a call at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
