Investigators said Nguyen arrived home and witnessed a robbery inside his gated community. When the robber saw Nguyen, he tried to rob him, too, and shot him, police said.
"Because of what happened on that night, our family has lost a husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and uncle," Nguyen's family wrote in a statement.
Police said Nguyen's killer is black, in his 30s to 40s and about 5 feet 9 inches tall with a stocky, muscular build.
Nguyen's family asked anyone who knows anything about the killing to come forward.
"Your help could provide some much needed justice and prevent another family from enduring this painful and difficult loss."
