HOUSTON – Harris County prosecutors say they are seeing an increasing number of people filing fake deeds in an attempt to and steal an unsuspecting person's property or house.
Harris County Deputy Clerk George Hammerlein suggests people search public deed records to see if anything looks suspicious.
Here's how to see if someone has filed a fake deed on your property:
1) Go to the Harris County Clerk's website.
2) Run two searches.
3) First, search by your LAST NAME in the grantor field.
4) Then run the search again with your last name in the grantee field. The result will show deeds filed with your name, including the correct deed filed when you purchased your property or home.
5) If you want to view a suspicious deed, you'll have to contact the clerk's office.
If you think a crook is trying to take your property, contact the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
