HOUSTON – A Houston ISD middle school student was detained after the district says a loaded gun was found in a backpack.
HISD says the loaded handgun was found in a student's backpack at Cullen Middle School in southeast Houston. A tip was called in and a HISD police officer on campus took the student into custody and confiscated the weapon.
The student is charged with possession of a prohibited weapon in a school zone. Disciplinary action will be taken against the student as outlined in the HISD Code of Conduct, the district says.
HISD released a statement which read in part: "Please know that we take these situations very seriously. The safety of our students and staff at Cullen Middle School is always our absolute top priority."
