A female person of interest was released without charges

Omari Danta Barnes

HOUSTON – Houston police are still looking for one person of interest wanted in the fatal shooting of a landscaper back in February. Homicide detectives were originally looking for two persons of interest, but a woman was located, interviewed and released without charges.

Investigators want to know where 28-year-old Omari Danta Barnes is. He is a person of interest in the death of Jose Gomez.

Houston police say on the morning of Feb. 21, Gomez, 36, went out to his truck to head to work. A few minutes later, Gomez's roommate found him shot to death in a drainage ditch in front of his residence, in the 4600 block of Phlox on Houston's south side.

There were no known witnesses or suspects in the shooting.

Last week, police were asking for help in identifying a woman whom they said walked into the Chase Bank on Cullen and gave details about the murder. After seeing the photos shown by media outlets, the woman contacted investigators who determined she did not witness the crime, had no connection to the crime, nor did she have any information on a possible suspect.

Anyone with information on Barnes' whereabouts is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
