HOUSTON – The once-respected cancer doctor convicted of poisoning her boyfriend told Local 2 that she is surviving in jail on her faith and that she often prays.
Dr. Ana Gonzalez-Angulo spoke to investigative reporter Jace Larson from the Harris County Jail Tuesday evening, one day after a jury decided she should spend 10 years in prison.
In the interview, she did not speak about the facts of her case because she said she and her attorneys plan to appeal.
She was convicted last week of poisoning her boyfriend, Dr. George Blumenschein, by putting a chemical used in antifreeze in his coffee in January 2013. Blumenschein and Gonzalez-Angulo once worked together doing cancer research and became sexually involved.
Gonzalez said jail has been hard on her. She said she is religious and relying on her family to keep her strong.
Gonzalez-Angulo will be moved to an intake prison in the coming days or weeks. She will then be permanently moved to one of the women's prisons in Gatesville, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said. Gatesville is between Austin and Waco in central Texas.
Gonzalez-Angulo's attorney told media after sentencing Monday that he will worry about her while she is in prison.
"It's incredibly concerning and my guess is as that begins to sink in the coming days, that it is going to be very traumatic. It certainly is for her lawyers to think about, just knowing the kind of person she is," attorney Derek Hollingsworth said.
He also reminded the public of the good she once did.
"Dr. G. is an incredibly caring doctor who devoted her entire life and profession to curing breast cancer," Hollingsworth said.
Blumenschein has said Gonzalez-Angulo's actions cost him quality of life and the poison damaged his body.
