Security increased at Worthing High School after fight breaks out

HOUSTON – Security was increased at a southeast Houston high school Tuesday morning after a fight broke near the campus, Houston Independent School District officials said.

Worthing High School students told Local 2 the fight started on Monday and students, still angry with each other, finished it Tuesday in the parking lot across from the school.

"They have fights almost every day at our school," said Devonte Kenneybrew, a senior at Worthing and witness to the fight. "Yesterday the lights had went out and there was fighting, like seven fights on the third floor. Seven. So the teachers are trying to break it up and everything."

Kenneybrew said during Tuesday's fight things escalated quickly and someone pulled out a gun.

"One of the officers had got one of the students and had him on the ground handcuffed. And I don't know if it was a student or parent that had a gun pointing at the officer and there were two teachers standing right there trying to break up the fight, they were in the middle of it," he said.

The increased police presence was obvious out of the front of the schools as patrol vehicles lined up.

Kenneybrew said typically the Worthing campus has two officers, but on Tuesday he saw as many as seven.

HISD addressed safety issues in the following statement.

"Before classes this morning, an altercation took place across the street from Worthing High School. As a result of the situation, additional officers have been assigned to the campus and police are investigating. Please be assured that all students are safe at this time and instruction is continuing as usual. Please know we take these situations very seriously, as the safety of our students is always our top priority. Administrators have alerted parents via call out. As more details are available they will be shared as well."
